Splitting Issue!

I brought a modem cable splitter as I only had 1 port in the back of my wireless router, as I've got 2 boxes. However now only 1 box will ever work at a time and the other box comes up with the standard 'scrambled or no video' sign. The box that comes up with that sign doesn't have the flashing lights on the back, I was assuming the flashing meant it was receiving information. I've taken one of the cables out of the splitter at a time, and when only one cable is in the box that has the cable plugged in works. Any ideas? As i've run out!
