Is there a way of lowering the quality of file size of recordings?

I put in a 2gb usb last night for the first time thinking it would record a 1hr program ok. It filled the 2gb in 27mins!!! Is this usual? I know I need a bigger storage device but is there a way to lower the file size for now?

2GB is very small,don't record HD channels as they take up more space.
